3 ways to combat short-term low mood

We all go through periods of feeling down at certain times during our lives, where we may feel more stressed, sad, tired or anxious than usual. Making a few simple lifestyle changes can help to alleviate low mood:

  1. Exercise more

Although it can sometimes be difficult to motivate yourself to exercise when you’re feeling down, getting active in the fresh air can work wonders. Try and find an activity you enjoy, whether it’s running, cycling or walking the dog, so that the exercise doesn’t feel like too much effort.

  1. Go to bed earlier

Always feeling tired and sluggish? Going to bed earlier may be the answer. Gradually get your body clock used to the earlier nights by climbing under the covers an hour or half an hour earlier each night. If your wandering mind tends to keep you awake, settle down with a book or magazine to take your mind off whatever you’re worrying about, and you might find yourself dozing off naturally.

  1. Eat better

Eating foods with high amounts of sugar, fat or salt can sometimes affect our energy levels. Try to fit your five a day into your meals somewhere, and include more starch such as potato skins, brown rice and wholemeal bread in your diet. If you eat meat, stick to lean cuts and try to eat more fish, at least two lots per week, making sure one of them is oily.
